Things We Talked About Today

-Cleve has entered the 21st century by enrolling in direct deposit for his paycheck. John has been trying to convince him that is so much more convenient, but Cleve has always preferred the face-to-face interaction of visiting the bank. The funny thing is that despite direct deposit saving Cleve a trip to the bank, he missed visiting it so much that he went there yesterday to withdraw some money just so he could have the personal interaction with a teller!

-We mentioned that the personal interaction may become costly as some banks are starting to charge monthly fees for transactions with a live teller. The free alternative is to use automated deposits at ATM machines.

-Say thanks to your pastor by entering them to win a trip to the Catalyst Conference in Atlanta, October 6-8. The entry form is at www.wafj.com.

-Our movie guy, Bob Waliszewski from Focus on the Family, gave us the family-friendly perspective on this weekend's new releases. He does not recommend Easy A and gave Alpha and Omega a 3 out 5 rating because of "wink, wink humor" that wasn't necessary for a movie targeting children. Bob does recommend Amish Grace which is out this week on DVD. For those still wanting to see What If, it's no longer playing in Augusta but will be out on DVD in December.
-Bowen Hammitt, son of Matt from Sanctus Real, is doing so well after heart surgery that doctors are ready to stitch his chest back together this afternoon. Updates are at http://www.bowensheart.com/.

-Another 88.3 WAFJ artist is having medical issues with a child. Aaron Shust's son, Nicky, is not able to hold down food. He is using a feeding tube until doctors can figure out what he can eat. Tests showed that he has a lot of food allergies, and this is creating a huge complication. Updates are at http://twitter.com/aaronshust and http://aaronshust.blogspot.com/.

-John has two thoughts on potty training:
1) It's God's way of teaching patience to parents
2) It should be considered a sport, with all of the cheering involved and the hurried trips to the bathrooms to avoid an accident
Evan has turned a corner and is hopefully on his way out of pull-ups!

-Coming up Monday...Cleve tells us how he rescued his daughter from frogs, and we're giving away stuff! You could win a family four-pack of tickets to the Mayhem and Misdirection show with master illusionist Harris III and comedy group 321 Improv. It's happening on Friday, September 24th at The Sanctuary in Evans. Listen to win at 6:10 with the Monday Morning Mindbender and at 7:40 with the Cheapie of the Week. Plus, we'll be giving away Matthew West concert tickets throughout the week. When you hear a Matthew West song on the morning show (between 6 and 9 am), be the first to call and correctly identify the song, and you'll win a pair of tickets to his October 1st concert in Grovetown.

Things We Talked About Today

-Jonny Diaz joined us by phone. He will be in concert (FREE) on Tuesday at 7 PM at the Augusta Common and again on October 1st with Matthew West and Josh Wilson at New Hope Worship Center in Grovetown. Jonny's brother, Matt, plays for the Atlanta Braves and baseball seems to run in their family. They have another brother who played professional baseball, and Jonny received a baseball scholarship to Florida State University. After a short stint there, God decided to take him in a different direction. We also found out that he wrote "More Beautiful You" after leading music at summer youth camps and seeing how young girls struggle with beauty. Other interesting things about Jonny: he is in a fantasy football league with Matthew West and Josh Wilson and he has a dog named Bodie that is a goldendoodle (golden retriever and poodle mix). Bodie is already huge at 5 months old and expected to double in size! Jonny's wife likes to put clothes on him and has been looking for a doggie halloween costumes, much to Johnny's dismay.

-Today is the last day of our Celebration of Life Blood Drive. You can donate at area Shepeard Blood Centers or at the bloodmobile (1o to 6) in the Martinez K-Mart parking lot.

-The latest update on Bowen Hammitt (son of Matt from Sanctus Real) is that he has made miraculous improvement and is off of life support. Updates are at http://www.bowensheart.com/.

-John raved about a recipe for Tex-Mex Chicken and Rice that his family tried this week. Click here for the recipe. We're still looking for quick and easy recipes that you make for your family. Send them to john@wafj.com, and we'll give you a gift if we use yours in our upcoming new cooking feature.

-We talked about 6 Things You Should Never Reveal on Facebook. Here's the list

-Coming up Friday: Our movie guy, Bob Waliszewski of Focus on the Family, has the family-friendly perspective on this weekend's new movies at 7:10.

Things We Talked About Today

-Cleve's nervous about how his Atlanta Braves fare going into the playoffs. They lost again last night. He can't even watch the games anymore because their season has been full of so many ups and downs that it drains him. Fans are hoping for a fairy tale ending since this is Bobby Cox's last season as manager.

-Matthew West will be here two weeks from Friday for a show at New Hope Worship Center in Grovetown. His new CD is full of songs that he wrote based on life stories sent in by his fans. If you go to the concert, you'll get to hear some of these story-songs, and you might even find your own life story in one them.

-Matt Hammitt's (Sanctus Real) baby boy, Bowen, was still on life support as of this morning. The latest update (mid-morning) said that doctors felt he was strong enough to start weaning him off the life support. Keep up the prayers and stay updated at http://www.bowensheart.com/.

-The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says Americans are not eating enough fruits and vegetables to maintain a healthy diet. This morning, we talked about how to get your family excited about eating these foods. One guy told us that he makes a green smoothie filled with 15 different fruits and vegetables and that his kids like it! He got the idea from http://www.greensmoothiegirl.com/. The conversation continues on the 88.3 WAFJ Facebook Fan Page.

-John's daughter, Emma, will be 10 months old tomorrow. She is a sweet little girl who is developing a mean streak of biting her brother and pulling his hair. But she does it with a smile! John wondered if this is just something girls do, since Evan never did these things, or if it is universal among all babies. Several parents who went through the same thing called and said the best way to keep her from biting others is to bite her back!

-Cleve told us about a new superbug that has made its way from India to the United States. John used this as an opportunity to tout the benefits of using hand sanitizer, and Cleve thinks he's OCD in that department. A nurse from Aiken Regional called to defend John and his love for hand sanitizer, but Cleve thinks they both need therapy.

-Coming up Thursday...Jonny Diaz ("More Beautiful You" and "Stand For You") join us at 6:10 and 7:40. He's in concert at Westabou (free show) on September 21st and in Grovetown on October 1st with Matthew West and Josh Wilson. You'll have a chance to win tickets to see him at the October 1st concert. Also, John will share a great new recipe with a tex-mex flair that his family tried this week.

Things We Talked About Today

-The Farmer's Almanac is out with it's Winter 2011 weather predictions for the Deep South and says we should see a cold winter with a lot of snow, even in Florida! Another Blizzard of 1993 maybe? We'll see.

-Angela Martin of SRS told us about CSRA College Night at the James Brown Arena. It runs from 5:30 til 8:00 tonight and is a chance for high school students to meet recruiters from over 150 colleges and universities. They'll also give away $17,000 in scholarship money through a random drawing.

-A national driver's test conducted by GMAC Insurance found that between men and women the better drivers are...men! Women seem to be more involved in distracted driving behaviors, which may explain why men fared better on the test. One of the surprising things is that 85 percent of test takers could not accurately identify the proper action to take when approaching a yellow traffic light. Take the test yourself (maybe your spouse too) at http://www.gmacinsurance.com/.

-We gave an update on Bowen Hammitt, the 5 day old son of Matt from Sanctus Real. He had heart surgery yesterday and had a rough night. There was a point where Matt and Sarah thought they were going to lose him. Last we heard, he was on full life support. Please join us in praying for a miracle for this family. Get updates at http://www.bowensheart.com/.

-Carter Newman of the ASU Golf Team joined us by phone. He is the brother-in-law of own David Perry. Carter and his teammates were honored at the White House yesterday in a ceremony for collegiate national champions. He said that White House cookies are phenomenal and that it was surprising to see sweet tea served there, an area not traditionally considered "southern." Carter told us they gave the president a set of golf balls with the number "44" on them to signify where he falls in the order of presidents. They hope Obama will use the balls since he is a golfer.

-We're still looking for your quick and easy recipes for our new cooking feature. If we use yours, you'll get a gift from us. Send them to john@wafj.com.

Things We Talked About Today

-The Monday Morning Mindbender
Question: According to a recent survey, 40 percent of women admit they base their first impression of other women on this. What is it?
Answer: Their shoes.
Aaron McCray had the correct answer, after first asking his wife. She said women do that to see if the shoes look comfortable so they'll know if they want a pair just like them.

-John admitted he was totally wrong about the Georgia/South Carolina football game. His prediction of GA 17 SC 14 didn't hold up. We gave away that stack of 10 CD's of artists who had Georgia and South Carolina connections that we told you about on Friday. Kelly Howell had predicted that her Gamecocks would win and hers was the name drawn from the stack of South Carolina fans.

-Lori Newton talked to us about a new faith-based weight-loss group she is starting at Mosaic United Methodist Church in Evans. The group is called SLIM - Sharing Life in Motion. The class is part nutrition education and part physical activity. They start this Thursday at 7 PM. It's open to the public and you can contact Lori at (706) 860-4609.

-The Cheapie of the Week is a FREEBIE! See the post below this one to get your Mueller's Spaghetti Noodles, all 40 ounces of them.

-The Celebration of Life Blood Drive starts today and runs through Thursday. You can check http://www.wafj.com/ for locations and times.

-Matt Hammitt of Sanctus Real has a son, Bowen, who was born 4 days ago with a heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). His first surgery was this morning and you can keep up with their story at http://www.bowensheart.com/.

-Coming up Tuesday: At 6:50, Angela Martin from SRS will tell us about CSRA College Night happening Tuesday at the James Brown Arena. Also, who fared better recently on a national driver's test, men or women? We'll talk about that at 7:10, and it could win you some of our last tickets to Saturday's Chris & Chris concert.
