Morning Show Notes - Friday, September 9th


-The border battle between Georgia and South Carolina in Athens was a big conversation topic this morning. The game is at 4:30 pm tomorrow on ESPN.

-Men 50 and older can take advantage of free prostate screenings during National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. University Hospital is offering free screenings tomorrow from 9 am to 1 pm at First Baptist Church of North Augusta. Doctors Hospital is offering free screenings from Sunday until Saturday at their lab.

-Bob Waliszewski, our movie guy from Focus on the Family, talked about Warrior and Contagion this morning and does not recommend either movie for families. Read his reviews at http://www.pluggedin.com/.

-The Augusta Fire Department is celebration 125 years of service on Saturday with a parade at 10 am in Downtown Augusta and family festivities on the Augusta Common from 11 am to 3 pm.

-Our Augusta Greenjackets won the first game of the playoffs at home last night, beating Savannah 4-1. Game 2 is Friday night in Savannah.

-Over 140 colleges and universities will be represented at CSRA College Night, tonight from 5 to 8:30 at the James Brown Arena. Scholarships will be given away and financial aid information will be available.

-First Baptist Church of Augusta is hosting the "Turning Earthly Treasures Into Kingdom Glory" Estate Sale this Saturday from 8 am to 1 pm. You'll find household items for sale at a great discount. Proceeds benefit local missions. Listen to our conversation with Niti Carlson.

Simple Cooking - Southwestern Stew


Two cans of black beans (rinsed and drained)
A bag of frozen corn
Two cans of diced tomatoes with green chiles
One can of chicken broth
A pound of cooked ground beef

Put it all in a crockpot together and cook on high for 4 hours or low for six hours. Add cumin and chili powder to taste and sprinkle with shredded cheese when it's done.

-Everyone's been talking (most unfavorably) about the solid red jerseys that Georgia wore in Saturday's game against Boise State. But, have you seen the University of Maryland's new outfits? They're eye-popping! See it

-Our Augusta Greenjackets miraculously won the South Atlantic League's Southern Division title for the second half of the season. They face Savannah in Game 1 of the playoffs on Wednesday at 7:05 PM at Lake Olmstead Stadium. This is the first time they've been back to the playoffs since they won the league title in 2008.
